2011 Design Trends

Here are the top 10 trends for 2011 as published by the National Kitchen and Bath Association. You’ll see classy, time-tested designs with some inspiring elements.

1. Commitment to Color:

The mango and carrot colors in this kitchen set off the modern design elements and allow the cabinetry and appliances to pop.

Homes where the kitchen opens into the family room and dining area need to balance the wall colors through out the the entire space.

2. Tactile Textures:

Notice the rug in this bathroom? Designers inset glass mosaic tiles into the limestone floor to create the look of a rug. I first saw this at a convention and I really did think I was about to walk on a carpet.

3. Glass Attributes:

This kitchen uses glass throughout to give the room a more cohesive look. Even the hood has glass elements.

4. Free Standing Tubs:

Though most bathrooms don't have the room for a free standing tub, you must admit it catches your eye. It can be seen from the bedroom through french doors that lead into the bathroom.

5. Espresso colored cabinetry:

Darker cabinetry is becoming more popular again. As long as you use enough lighting they won't make a room look dark.

6. Walk-In Pantries:

I really wish this pantry was part of my kitchen. If you don't have an actual room set aside for storage, your cabinets can become your pantry with many storage solutions created by Hafele. Base cabinets with deep drawers can hold dishes, serving platters, pot lids or small appliances.

7. Detailed Ceilings:

The rough hewn ceiling gives the appearance of age even though it was recently created. There are lots of trey ceiling styles that are often used in a master bedroom or a dining room to give the room a real "punch."

8. Natural Elements:

The beauty of nature abounds in a kitchen; especially in your choice of counter top material. Granite is the most popular counter top material with quartz products such as CaesarStone or SileStone a close second. If you decide to go with granite we make sure that you take the time to go to our fabricator and pick out the exact slab you want to use.

9. Tiered Proportions:

Using varying heights in your cabinetry or with a raised "breakfast bar" your kitchen develops more personality. A long, straight row of wall cabinets is boring. A raised "breakfast bar" doesn't just look nice, it can hide a sink full of dishes.

10. Inlaid Flooring:

For this bathroom a travertine tile was used with a wood-like tile. Tiles can be porcelain, ceramic, glass, metal real stone. Today shower walls often have an accent tile made of glass or metal. Bathroom floors can be laid down in a myriad of patterns and composition.

Cabinet Door Styles

When you look at cabinets, what is the first thing you see? The doors and drawers. The great news is cabinet makers have an unlimited selection of stains, paints and glazes. Here are a few examples:

This door is cherry with a pecan stain and brown glaze, giving it a lot of depth in the details.

The doors below are more simple. The first is quarter sawn oak with a champagne stain. The second is Alder with a natural stain and brown glaze to bring out the linear design. It’s nice to see the different wood grains.

Here are two examples of painted cabinet doors. The top door has been painted and then given a distressed look using a brown glaze. It is antiqued over burgundy, and then treated with a brown glaze. The door on the bottom is painted a sage color. It doesn’t have a stain, and has a very even clean look to it.

It seems that whatever home design magazine you pick up, organization is key to their designs. Storage is always a big issue when redesigning a kitchen. Ever wondered what to do with all of your clutter? How can you use the space inside of you cabinets better? Well there are some great new cabinet and closet hardware pieces that will help you put it all away.

Maximize Kitchen Space! Make the most of your cabinets with Hafele or Rev-a-Shelf products. Some product ideas:

Take your kitchen plans and label where everything is going to be. You have to do your homework to make sure the kitchen is going to function with how you cook."

A Colorful Kitchen

It makes me sad when people are afraid to use color in their home. Home is where the heart is, right? Express yourself, embrace yourself, and be comfortable with yourself! A house of beige is just plain boring. Even in the kitchen. I understand, kitchens are a huge investment and appliances, cabinets, tile, etc. are all expensive things to replace just because you're tired of it. So go with your gut. Choose colors you've loved forever, not just what's trendy.

There are certainly levels to the permanence of a color too. You can even accent with colorful dishes on open shelves.

The Kitchen and Bath People's "Product of the Week" : Counter Balance Lighting by WAC

Simple, classic, and adjustable; WAC's Counter Balance lighting line is beautiful and appropriate in many applications and settings. Here is a photo of the chandelier over a kitchen island in our kitchen and bath showroom.

This is lovely over a kitchen island for task lighting, or a dining table or reception desk as an accent...
The wires are on a pulley system which allows you to easily manipulate the height of the fixture, or the distance of the fixture from a surface below.

You can adjust the length of the individual lights on this version.

And, as you can see, there are glass shade options; lots of them!

These lights can also be put on a dimmer switch; a "sustainable choice" that improves the flexibility of these elegant fixtures.

The Kitchen and Bath People's "Product of the Week" - Wall Mounted Faucets

One of those spots I hate cleaning the most is that tiny sliver of counter between the back of my faucet and the backsplash. It's a tight spot that gets gooey and grimy every time I wash my hands or do the dishes. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to cleanly swipe that surface without any obstacles? Well friends, that is one of the beautiful things about a wall mounted faucet! Paired with an undermount sink, even better.

A recent client of mine has opened my eyes to this... why didn't I think of this before?? Well, here are some great looking designs I've found for the kitchen and bathroom:

For a clean and modern look in the kitchen, here is Kohler's Torq faucet.Or, go with Danze's Opulence faucet for a more vintage, cottage look.But if you're feeling a bit daring and want ultimate flexibility, how about Kohler's Karbon faucet, available as a wall mount.
For your bathroom, here is a beautifully classic yet modern faucet; Showhouse by Moen's Solace faucet.

And for the traditional home, here is Brizo's Tresa faucet.
There are also single handle wall mounted faucets. I like Jado's IQ faucet...

Now, for a word to the wise. In case, heaven forbid, something were to go awry with the faucet, it's good to have an easy way to get to the source of the problem. Plan ahead by placing these types of faucets on a wall that's shared with a closet or somewhere you can strategically place a removable panel. Or, incorporate a detail like what's shown in the photo above. Notice that the faucet is actually mounted on a bulk coming out from the wall. It creates a clever little shelf; but I imagine perhaps the top slides away, allowing access behind. Great design can be practical and look great!

Furniture Cabinetry

Let's face it, the kitchen is the most popular room in the house. It has not only opened up to the main "living" spaces, it has become a main living space. As such, why not design it to seamlessly flow with the rest of the house? Using furniture pieces, like a dresser or armoire, for kitchen storage is a unique, chic, and inexpensive way to update and personalize your kitchen.

Above, an old dresser has been transformed into an affordable kitchen island. I picture the storage inside looking something like this:

Imagine using a beautiful armoire, like this one pictured below, by Oly, to store dishes, mixing bowls, serverware, etc...With this perspective, Susan Serra demonstrated in her blog how an armoire could fit seamlessly into the overall kitchen scheme. (As a side note, I love Susan's blog - if you are looking for great insight, education, design, reading all things kitchen design... this one's for you!)

Glass Doors

Glass doors on cabinetry is a popular look. In kitchens it's nice to have at least a few to display dishes, crystal and serverware while also adding a light and airy feel. Windows are also hugely desirable in the kitchen, but what if you have a less than desirable view?

The cabinet doors above are backless and placed right in front of a window, masking the view of the neighbors house while still allowing natural light to flow through. Genius! And beautiful. Below, you might understand this better in plan.

Shown below are some two sided glass cabinets. This beautifully functional idea allows access to dinner ware from the the butlers pantry and the dining room while also serving as a lovely, back-lit display for the dining room.

Window Shelves

I LOVE window shelves. Open shelving is a great way to display neatly arranged dishes, throw in some accents like pottery or framed art, and cut down on the weight of a room full of cabinetry. But have you ever thought about hanging shelves in front of your window?

Glass Backsplash

A nice smooth surface like glass or resin is probably the easiest thing to wipe down and can still be interesting if backed with a pattern.

Okay, this isn't glass, it's 3Form resin that's been embedded with real twigs and dried leaves, super cool, BUT... that's expensive. This article suggested using wallpaper and covering it with clear glass to get a similar yet more affordable look. I think this is a fabulous idea; there are SO many possibilities!

What can I say, I love 3Form! Though it's seen and used more often in commercial design, it certainly has its place in the home. 3Form's product line has grown more and more extensive over the years, from simple, colorful resin panels to pressed glass, then exterior materials, lighting fixtures... all using the same basic idea. 3form will take their base material, be it resin or glass, and press various materials and or objects within the material to form interesting, translucent, textures and patterns. The material is flexible and can be bent or heat molded into various shapes if desired. 3Form also, conveniently, has an entire line of mounting hardware, addressing the more popular ways their product has been used. This material is SO flexible, I can't even begin to list all its uses... but here are some ways people have used 3Form in their kitchens and bathrooms.

Drama on the Ceiling!

Whether it's with a splash of color, a complementary accent material, or a beam and girder detail, involving the ceiling in the overall design of a room is a great opportunity to add interest and creativity. The ceiling is more than just a flat surface producing light, it is an important part of your room's third dimension. A ceiling designed to compliment cabinetry, furniture, lighting, etc. can give definition to spaces within a large space or simply keep your eyes and imagination stimulated. As design elements move from the floor and up the walls, don't stop there; let them flow on up to the ceiling!

So many interesting things going on here. This accent wood-plank ceiling appears to be floating, allowing other elements to intersect; I imagine the hood vent puncturing though to the other side. The generous opening allows natural light to flow in from either a skylight or clerestory window above. The ceiling's warm wood tone compliments and softens the edgy cabinetry finish.

While studying interior design at the University of Tennessee I shared a building with the art and architecture students. This building sort of let it guts hang out with exposed structure, conduits, plumbing... it was all out there for us to learn from and enjoy. I really grew to appreciate this idea. These elements that bring a building to life can be a beautiful and interesting design element. This kitchen design exposes it "guts" artfully... you can see concrete block, electrical conduit, a ventilation duct, and the ceiling's beam structure. Now, the ceiling can continue past the structure and allow natural light through clerestory windows.

For the first "Product of the Week" I have chosen a warming drawer.

This one pictured above is by Miele, has a full extension drawer and allows temperatures ranging from 104-185 degrees F. This is a super handy addition for your kitchen; allowing you to warm up your dishes or keep prepared food warm as you're waiting for that last casserole to come out of the oven.

Okay, I'm going to try my best to keep up with this "Product of the Week" thing... I've even set up a recurring reminder on my calendar :).

Design Ideas for your Small Kitchen

Okay, so not everyone (correction... not many of us) has a large kitchen with ample storage, miles of counter space and king size appliances. So, how does one plan a kitchen to fit all the gadgets, tools, and appliances needed and still leave room to breathe? It comes down to creative storage and simplicity. Combining clutter-free storage solutions with a clean color palette will bring serenity to a potentially jumbled mess.

Europeans have been designing small spaces for a long time now; so I turned to Fagor, a Spanish manufacturer of appliances, for appliance solutions in a small space.

Three years ago, Fagor released their Design Cooking Centers which bundle ergonomics and storage to create an efficient, make-sense appliance unit. A great way to expand a small kitchen is by grouping large items together. The dishwasher storage center positions the dishwasher 18" above the floor and surrounds it with shelves and drawers for utensils, gadgets, dinnerware and cookware. The stainless steel finish is clean, simple, and goes with everything.

Fagor also carries 24" refrigerators (fridges are typically 30" wide and up) and handy little 12", drop in cooktops available in both induction and gas heat.

Keep the color scheme simple. I love this little kitchen with shelves that blend right into the walls, simple black cabinets, and a pop of pattern on the floor. The solid fields of color visually expand the space.

This sweet, mini kitchen feels larger with its clean white and wood tones palette. But, what I think is especially great (besides this most adorable hood) is the use of space under the stair way. They've squeezed in the refrigerator, wine storage, and a little pantry. The island is perfection... is that an old school drafting table? Love it! (Though, a word of warning, if you don't have room for an island, don't do it! You should have 42" between the edge of the island and the edge of any nearby counter top.)

Need flexible storage? I think roll away cart storage is a great idea. Pull it out exactly when and where you need it and tuck it away when you don't. I also enjoy this idea of hanging pans and other cooking tools in front of the window. Light still shines through, but this provides a quirky sort of privacy and is one less thing to be stored in your cabinets.

Above, another fun and creative way to store cooking essentials, a pot rack made of copper pipes. Here's a link to instructions for this charming DIY project.

These are great ways to take a few bulky items off your counter tops. This built in spice shelf gives a nice custom look. Under cabinet lights highlight the varieties while illuminating the counter top. A magnetic, wall hung knife rack keeps your knives within arms reach but out of the way.

If you have a window in a seemingly inconvenient location, say, right where you want to mount a mirror, no problem! Just suspend the mirror in front of your window. It will just glow! A Twist on the Tub/Shower Combo

Here's an idea I'm applying to my current bathroom project. Having a sort of tub/shower "zone" in my situation was the best use of space but it really seems practical for other applications where you want a nice, large soaking tub with a separate, luxurious shower. It's nice to rinse of before or after a bath, why not have the shower right there? I think this solution is stunning and clever. Here's another take on that idea but still leaves the tub open to the rest of the bathroom:

A Custom Kitchen : Sinks

We all want options. Demand (and, in some cases, need) along with designer innovation have led to some great options for the kitchen's "wet zone." With numerous options for sink depth, finish, style, and organization tools along with an endless variety of specialized and well designed faucets, the kitchen sink can be just as personalized as you!
The Cascade sink by Elkay has an integral drainboard and surrounding lip providing a perfect ledge for any accessories you choose, including a cutting board, wire rack, and colander. The drain board can act as a space to push these accessories out of the way when you need access to the whole sink. Embossing within the sink allows you to insert the wire rack at different levels, bringing dishes up to you and minimizing your need to bend over the sink.
Franke uses a similar lip design to support your sink accessories... but they take it a step further with an integrated knife rack and utensil wells!I love the open, industrial feel to this sink (it's really just the way the sink is installed). A great display for nice pots and makes everything easy to find... it reminds me of a chef-style kitchen. This is also by Franke.
For practicality's sake, here we have a shallow sink. This particular sink is from Moen. For anyone with back problems, this will certainly help alleviate any pains brought on from bending over to wash dishes. Like the wire rack in the Elkay Cascade sink, this bring the dishes up to you, minimizing bending. This is also ADA friendly. For anyone bound to a wheel chair, this sink's depth leaves plenty of knee space below (assuming you don't have cabinets in the way) and makes it easier to reach your dishes in the sink.
Kohler's Karbon faucet has style and function. With all its joints, you can position it to spray water exactly where you want and it will hold that position. It's like a little interactive sculpture for your kitchen, with a purpose! Being a brass and carbon fiber (the stuff road bike frames are made of, making them ultra light-weight) blend, the faucet can be manipulated with weightless fluidity.
Jado's Saffron faucet has the look you would expect to see in any chef's kitchen. This faucet brings professional kitchen design into the home. The high arching hose design provides maximum durability and flexibility and makes it easier to wash those large stock pots.Brizo's Pascal faucet is absolutely fabulous! This guy allows both hand-free and touch-control functionality which conserves water and makes clean up so much more efficient. Water can flow in both a spray or a stream. Just watch this video (link found on the upper-left side of the page) showing the Pascal in action. Quite the culinary experience. Touch free makes life so much easier when dealing with raw meat!!

A Custom Kitchen : Cabinet Storage

A combination of technology, creativity and demand has led to the evolution of some exceptionally innovative products for your kitchen. I want to write a short series on where these developments have taken us, starting with kitchen cabinet storage. Like most things, while aesthetic appeal is nice, it really is the inside that counts; and I think that regarding kitchen storage, organization and accessibility are the key elements that make cabinetry truly functional and pleasing. Companies like Rev-A-Shelf and Hafele carry some clever accessories to organize, tuck away, and keep everything in it's place.

These wonderful spice trays, by Rev-A-Shelf, effortlessly stack your seasonings, keeping them fully visible and accessible. Because the material is trim-able, this tray can be fitted precisely to any drawer.

A bread drawer kit (this one also by Rev-A-Shelf) will help keep bread tasting fresh.

If you need to make the most of your vertical space, check out these two-tier trays (another Rev-A-Shelf item). You might store utensils used less often in the bottom, while the top tier glides on wheels, allowing all items stored to remain at least partially visible and easy to get out. This is also trim-able for an exact fit.

This simple peg system (Rev-A-Shelf) allows items stacked high within drawers to stay in place, avoiding sliding and breaking.

Aren't those deep, dark corners of your lower cabinets the worst? The lazy susan is a common remedy for that problem, but I just love Hafele's LeMan's system. It's pivot and shape pulls everything out allowing full accessibility.

I will almost always recommend drawers over doors for your base cabinets. But in some cases, like under a sink, doors might make more sense. This doesn't mean you have to sacrifice storage. With this handy pull out by Hafele, cleaning products stay organized, visible and within reach.

These pantry pull-outs, by Hafele, are so practical. Just think of all the snacks that go to waste because they were shoved to the back of the pantry only to be recovered after expiration. Or how about that same hot-sauce you've bought 3 times because you thought you were out :). This system will not let food or storage go to waste.

Tax Credits Encourage Green Remodeling as part of The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act

Did you know that "spending $10,000 to retrofit a 1960's home with energy efficient features could save 8.5 tons of carbon... by comparison, increasing the energy efficiency of a new home 35% over current state requirements would cost $5,000 and would only reduce emissions by 1.1 tons."* In conclusion, "retrofitting existing homes with energy efficient features is 4-8 times more carbon and cost efficient."* I guess this is due to the waste and pollution caused by new construction as well as the further diminishing of our ever shrinking, precious green spaces.

Well, there is good news for you home owners out there who want to reduce your carbon footprint as well as save dollars on your water and energy bills. If you've been watching or listening the the news lately you've probably heard a lot of talk about the United Nations Climate Change Conference currently under way in Copenhagen. Then adding to that, there's still constant chatter on the economy. To both combat climate change and stimulate the economy, through The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, our states have been given money (our tax dollars) to provide tax incentives for purchasing and installing certain Energy Star appliances. This is being detailed and carried out by each individual state. You can find more information about these rebates by clicking here. North Carolina will begin phasing the rebate initiative in April of next year! If you happen to be in New York City over the holidays you can view Fagor's green kitchen installation at the Wired pop-up store through December 27. So far, the types of appliances that will qualify (that are of a particular interest to me) include Energy Star clothes washers, dishwashers, and refrigerators/freezers (there are of course others).This is Electrolux's front loading washing machine. Not only does it have the Energy Star label for its energy and water efficiency, my favorite feature is its 18 minute wash cycle!! AND it partner drier.... 18 minutes too! "Ready before you are."

All Miele dishwashers qualify for the Energy Star Program. The G 2002 Series uses only 5.1 gallons of water in the normal cycle, and a measly 1.2 gallons in the economy cycle. Above, take a look inside.

With the new year approaching, now is a good time to begin thinking about ways to decrease your carbon footprint. If you decided to do a complete kitchen or bathroom renovation, here are a few more green products (that do not qualify for the tax rebate) to give you "feel-goods" and maybe even lower some bills...

This is TOTO's Eco Promenade toilet and one of MANY water efficient models out there. The EPA has partnered with WaterSense to develop third party testing for water-efficient products. Toilets with the WaterSense-label use 32% less water and perform as well or better than non-labeled products. These save the average household 11 gallons of water per day!

Faucets can also earn the WaterSense label. This RSVP faucet by Brizo has earned the label due to it's laminar flow.

This beautiful surface is from the ECO line by Cosentino (makers of Silestone). These products incorporate recycled bottles, mirror, cystal ash and ceramic; they are non-porous products that will never need to be sealed; and installing it can contribute to 5 LEED points.

Not only can bamboo add beauty and visual interest, it is a highly renewable (aka. green) resource. Bamboo can be used for countertops, floors, accents, accessories, and much more!

Not Your Grandma's Clawfoot Tub...

Lately we've been receiving several phone calls for bathroom remodels. Why the sudden appetite for bathroom renovations? Beats me. But we sure are happy to see some potential business!

In light of bathrooms renovations, I thought it might be fun to showcase some beautiful freestanding tubs. Bathtubs have developed from the claw foot into an array of styles, providing something for everyone. Not only are free standing tubs a beautiful focal point in the bathroom, if you actually use the tub, a good soak in a hot bath is beneficial to your health. A hot bath will increase your heart rate - improving circulation, relax muscles, lower blood pressure, and can counteract stress and help you sleep at night. Hydrotherapy incorporates both hot and cold water baths, depending on what aches, to soothe various ailments whether it be a sprained ankle, poor circulation, a cold, hemorrhoids, arthritis, insomina... the list goes on. Water is natures healer.

In this metro-chic, modern meets tradition bathroom the soaking tub was placed smack in the middle of the space. Talk about the center of attention! I love the striking, black and white, mosaic tile backdrop housing the "spa-bar". This is where an otherwise divided "his and her" bathroom comes together... so dramatically romantic!

This image reminds me of the Spinning Teacups ride at Disney World, maybe it's just those little girls... but I love it. The travertine material just glows... so natural and so relaxing.

Japanese were the originators of the healing bath soak; and it is still an integral part of their culture. The shedding of ones clothes symbolically casts-off the cares of the day. They then scrub and cleanse themselves before sinking into the hot bath. To them, the bath is purely for relaxation and their well-being.

Now to the traditional western bath we're all used to. The exaggerated ball in claw foot on this tub is so theatrical!

This clean-lined, contemporary tub is a piece from WS Bath Collections. The headrests are a veneered marine ply wood and the outside can be covered with either a wood or -get this- leather finish! An interesting thought providing a clean, tailored look (the details are quite beautiful) but I'm really curious to know how those materials stand up to the constant humidity. Well, it comes with a quality guarantee certificate so why not go for it? :)

Ah, this modern meets tradition tub is probably my favorite of the pieces I'm showing. The metallic finish & simple, classic shape of this bathtub will fit seamlessly with a variety of bathroom themes. So elegant.

A bath; what a wonderful way to reconnect with nature. 'Tis the Season for indulgences, take time out of your busy schedule to heal your body and soul.

Universal Design Ideas to Invest in Your Home

Countertops : Cold, Hard Facts

Granite

Being extremely durable, scratch & stain resistant, requiring very little maintenance, and, not to mention, attractive, granite has become a favorite surface for kitchens and baths. There are a multitude of colors & textures and the depth & movement is unmatched with copy-cats. A word of warning, if you decide to install granite in your home, be sure to personally (or have your designer) select the slab of stone to be used. Every slab is different; even of the same variety. You may even go so far as to select the portion of the slab to be used, as the color and movement will change throughout the piece.

Granite should be re-sealed every 3-5 years in a residential application in order to prevent staining. To clean, granite should be wiped free of dust regularly and periodically washed with a soft cloth, fresh water, and a mild detergent.

Marble

There are definitely mixed opinions concerning marble counters in the kitchen. It is beautiful, no doubt... but, if you really use your kitchen, it will never look the same as the day it was installed. Marble is soft and it stains and because of this, many don't recommend marble for kitchen counters. However, I like the positive spin Pau l Anater, on his blog, gave concerning marble when asked his opinion, "If you like the idea of your life making a mark on things, marble is for you." It certainly carries nostalgic traits; plus, it is beautiful and timeless (think ancient Rome). But if you want a kitchen to feel "like new" as long as possible it might be a good idea to use marble for only a portion, if any, of your kitchen's surfaces; like for a pastry center. Mixing counter surfaces can add visual interest and define different zones. As far as for bathroom countertops, people across the board seem to feel that marble is an appropriate material for that application.

Maintenance is a delicate issue with marble. Blot-out (try not to wipe-up) spills as soon as they happen to avoid etching in the stone, as anything with an acidic content will begin to break down the stone. Use coasters on marble, beverage glasses will leave a ring so treat your marble like you would a wood surface. Use cleaning products specific for marble both on the counter and on any vertical surface behind the marble (like mirror or tile) to prevent any drips of a harmful cleaning product from landing on your marble surface and staining or damaging the sealer or the stone.

Quartz Surface

Quartz (in regards to countertops) is an engineered stone combining rock (typically quartz) and resins. Now, there are options that integrate recycled content. Cosentino's product ECO is made of 75% post-consumer or post-industrial materials such as glass, mirror, porcelain, and stone scrape. The choices and looks for quartz surfaces are ever growing and evolving to keep up with current trends including concrete looks, stone looks, and styles with flecks of glass or mirror for sparkle. Ina Garten used Caesarstone, one of the many manufacturers of quartz counters, in her barn kitchen (pictured above) for its impervious quality and markings like real stone. Compared to granite, quartz has a much more consistent look but still maintains depth.

Price wise, quartz costs about the same as granite. Manufactures of the product claim it's superiority over granite for it's increased stain, scratch, and mildew resistance. Maintenance is also reduced compared to stone; engineered stone will never need to be sealed and will stand up to harsher cleaning agents. Below is pictured a few of the many looks available with a quartz surface:

Solid Surface

Solid Surface is a completely man-made countertop product. There are many pros to this product including it's nearly seamless appearance and it's flexibility in creating three dimensional shapes. It can be molded into integral sinks, drainboards and back splashes, creating seamless, easy to clean counters with no gaps where bacteria can grow; making solid surface a popular product for health-care, in particular. It is a non-porous material so it is naturally stain resistant with no need for a sealant. Cleaning only requires soap, or an ammonia based cleaner, and water. Be sure the surface is wiped dry to avoid a filmy build-up. Another plus, because it is a "through body" material, scratches can be buffed out and old countertops can be refinished to look good as new. Solid surface is considered a "green" product due to it's durability, repair-ability, and recycled content.
The color possibilities are nearly as endless as quartz surface colors. Solid surface will not give you that same visual depth, however, and you won't find anything with glassy, reflective flecks. It has a softer, more marble like texture to the touch. There are variety of styles including looks to mimic granite or solid styles for a more modern look. Lighter colors are recommended for high-use areas because scratches will show up white.

"The Kitchen is the New Living Room" - Ina Garten

Don't you feel like something in the human subconscious motivates us to linger in the kitchen? Even if there isn't a proper place to sit, many people would rather pull up a seat on the counter than make their way over to the living room. It just feels good; to smell the smells, feel the energy, maybe help out with dinner or dishes. It only makes sense that the current trend in home design involves flowing spaces where the kitchen is open to the living room. We are social beings. We want to include the host during cocktail hour as he or she ties up loose ends. We want to help our kids with homework while preparing lunches for the next day. We want to snack while reading a book, the newspaper, or a magazine. So why not bring elements of the living room into the kitchen? Encourage those instincts and create a space that goes out of its way to invite people to get comfortable and stay a while.

This image reminds me on an elegant fireplace. I love the hearth design encasing the hood with the flanking built-in shelving. Just gorgeous! This kitchen looks like the perfect chefs study. Don't you want to just pull up a chair and curl up in front of a fireplace with one of those cook books? :)

These images are details from Ina Garten's barn kitchen. Placing a table lamp on your counter is a delightful way to add elements of a living room into your kitchen. The presence of a lamp, plus the warm light filtering through the shade, adds a lovely touch of charm.

And this big basket is so great! In a living room it might be used to store blankets or magazines; but in the kitchen, this deep and wide basket is practical and attractive for storing cookie sheets, cooling racks, and cutting boards.

Items like framed art and sculptural pieces, expected in the living room, become an intriguing surprise in the kitchen. These unique touches add personality and calm to a space that can sometimes get hectic as the cook is cranking out the next meal. Planning for Your Future with Universal Design : in the Kitchen

Last week I wrote about easy ways to incorporate universal design in your bathrooms. This week I want to expand on the subject and feature ways to make your kitchens more universally friendly. Kitchens have become the hub of our households, a place where members of all generations in the family convene. As such, kitchens should offer a friendly environment to all users. I want to re-emphasize the value added when taking a universal design approach in your remodeling project. Designing for the aging does not have to look geriatric, in fact the best universal design is one that goes unnoticed.

This side-opening oven by Fagor is so cool! (Pictured above are two, side-opening ovens, demonstrating the option for either door swing.) The design was a Merit Award winner in Interior Design Magazine's 2008 Best of the Year Awards. Its ability to install at any height, and the side swing door, keeps users from having to bend over a hot oven, reducing the risk of being burned. When paired with a pull out surface, like this one pictured on the left, moving your heavy casserole dish from the oven to a cooling surface is much easier.

Also, in regards to cooking appliances, consider an induction cooktop in a universal design, for their safety features. Click here to read about the benefits of induction cooking.

Pull down kitchen cabinet shelves are a convenient way to take full advantage of your upper cabinet storage. An accessible handle at the bottom allows you to easily bring those upper shelves down to your level, preventing anyone from having to stand on a chair (or the counter!) to get out the crock-pot, rarely used serving bowls...or whatever else might be storing up there. When the cabinet doors are closed, no one will know there's such a contraption hidden inside. Of course, I would not recommend displaying these behind glass doors.

Anything stored in typical base cabinets is usually going to be difficult to get out. Unless you're about 3' tall, a lot of crouching, bending, and digging is involved when attempting to access items from the depths of those spaces. Drawers are the best solution for the storage below your counters. All things kept inside are easy to find and retrieve. This drawer shown above even utilizes a sort of peg-board and dowel combination to keep things in their places, rather than letting them slide around every time you open the drawer.

Here's one more way to universalize the kitchen; think about integrating a table height surface (28-34" high) with clear space underneath that is at least 18" deep x 24" wide. This creates a useful multi-purpose surface. Not only can it become a place for snacks and homework, it can also function as a countertop where those bound to a wheelchair, or anyone who has trouble standing for an extended period of time, can sit and still help prepare meals.

You can also incorporate this idea under the sink. With a cute curtain draped underneath, you can create a European look and no one will ever recognize the sink to be ADA accessible. Also, notice the lever handle on the faucet (something I brought up when discussing universal bathroom design) and the bar pulls on the drawer. Levers and bars are easier for arthritic hands to grasp, as opposed to a knob shape.

I had claimed this was an image showing Fagor's wall racks and today I realized I had made a mistake. This is actually a detail of a Sachen Kuchen kitchen, showing their wall racks. So as you can see, these innovative wall racks are available through several companies, each with their own spin.

Planning for Your Future with Universal Design : in the Bathroom

According the the AARP, most Americans prefer living in a familiar place, their home, throughout their later years in life. Certified Aging in Place specialists can help homeowners fold universal design into their home, providing a space that is comfortable and safe and allows elderly to maintain their independence. Universal design is the "green of the future" as it will preserve its value for years to come, adding convenience for all users at any age. Below are some ways to subtly and beautifully incorporate universal design in your bathrooms.

It's a good idea to consider installing a sink in the bathroom that will allow wheelchair access. This wall-mounted sink by Decolav is handicap accessible as well as fashionable and functional with ample counter space and an integral sink basin, making clean-up a breeze.

Here's a more transitional and "homey" look. This custom design uses TOTO's Ryohan sink and looks like a piece of furniture. The open space below conveniently allows for wheelchair access.

Another detail to think about is your faucet's design. The lever handles on these Delta faucets are universally easy to use, for children as well as older individuals with arthritic hands.

It's also smart to consider lever handles for doors, instead of door knobs, throughout your home. This lovely lever handle is manufactured by Rocky Mountain Hardware.

While you may not need grab bars now, if you are remodeling a bathroom, go ahead and have your contractor install blocking needed for the bars to make that addition easier down the road. Now, thank goodness, manufacturers are putting more thought into the design of grab bars, like this one shown above, from Moen.

What is Induction Heating?

Induction cooking is the latest and greatest technology for your kitchen stove top. Though it's been used in Europe for decades it has made its way to the states within only the past few years. Let me tell you (from a layman's perspective) how it works.

When a pan (of ferrous material, aka. magnetic) is placed on the induction surface, an electromagnetic field is created. ONLY the pan gets hot. Look at this demonstration by Fagor, a pioneer in bringing induction cooking to the United States.

As you can see, it is not the element but the pan that gets hot. When the pan is removed no more heat is generated. This is a great safety feature for parents who's kids enjoy helping in the kitchen. It's also convenient for sloppy chefs... spills won't cook into the glass surface leaving them easy to wipe up :).

Induction cooktops are also energy and time efficient. Because energy is produced only where the pan is in direct contact, induction cooking uses 85-90% of the energy produced where as a gas cooktop is only about 30-40% efficient and electric, about 70% efficient. Because heat is produced instantly, water can be boiling in less than half the time it takes on a gas or electric cooktop and a pan can be ready for sauteing your veggies within seconds. Due to it's speed and even cooking, induction has become a favorite method of cooking for professional chefs and home makers alike.

Several kitchen appliance manufacturers carry induction cooktops. One of the major draw backs to this technology is cost, so now some companies are coming up with ways to make induction more affordable, available, and flexible.

Meile's Combisets are a modular design allowing clients to mix-and-match cooking surfaces to suite their cooking preferences (the induction cooktop is used in the middle of this configuration). You can put together any number of surfaces too which is great for small spaces and/or families where all you may need is two burners for a functional kitchen.

Fagor's portable induction cooktops provide this technology where it wasn't previously available. Now you can cook with induction in a dorm room, on a boat, or in the back yard. With a retail value of $250, Fagor has made induction cooking affordable to most consumers.

A Chef-Style Kitchen

As a new employee at the Kitchen and Bath People I have been flooding myself with images, articles, blogs, websites, and magazines relating to kitchen and bathroom design with the goal to inspire and educate myself so I might share these new discoveries with you. With the guidance of Phyllis and Les to point me in the right direction, so far I have made some exciting discoveries from innovative projects to fabulous designers.

One telling of the times trend is our increased time spent at home. The "economic crisis" has had some positive repercussions if one can think optimistically. More time at home, especially at meal time as we tighten our financial belt, leads to quality time with loved ones as we help in the kitchen and share meals around the table. Cooking for yourself and family is nourishing for the body and soul and allows a real appreciation (and awareness!) for what we are putting into our bodies. Maybe we'll take more time to savor and enjoy, allowing a slower paced and healthier lifestyle.

With a movement leading us to spend more time in the kitchen, kitchen design is leading towards an efficient, "chef-style" space with open shelves, utensils sitting right out on the counter, and keeping everything used often visible and easy to access. I love this style! In a way it seems to add softness and personality to the space. The kitchen is an open book!

Here are some ideas to make your kitchen more user friendly:

Julia Child's peg board wall of cookware is genius! If you have nice pots and pans, why not show them off? And what about this simple idea my husband once pointed out to me in a Crate and Barrel catalog...Don't know where to store those lids to your pots and pans? Just slip the handle for the lid right onto the handle of the pan and voila, problem solved!

A photo from Ina Garten's barn kitchen, designed by Robert Stilin and House Beautiful's "Kitchen of the Year," shows that separating wood and stainless utensils in separate containers keeps them organized and identifiable.

These wall racks by Fagor are fabulous! They keep everything you might need in site but off the counter space. Being ultra flexible, you can easily add and take away what you decide to hang from these racks.Here is an installation shot of a Sachen Kuchen kitchen. As you can see, there are many options out there, including some with integrated under cabinet lighting!
